On This Day In 1943, 133 Aircrew, including 13 Australians, in 19 specially adapted Lancaster Bombers, left RAF Base Scampton, on Operation Chastise, to bomb selected dams in the Ruhr Valley using the brilliantly designed "Bouncing Bombs". 9 Bombers were lost on the mission which was hailed as a huge success for disrupting the Nazi war effort.
