Way back in November I was flat out running a garage sale over a couple of weekends, my birthday was in the middle of it and I wanted to catch up with Byron. He was over from SA visiting someone in Australind and we had arranged to swap some insulators. Unfortunately, the timing didnt mesh and we missed each other :( .

But. after a few calls he managed to drop the insulators off at Dianas place. Later in the day she found them lying in her garden when she went to water. Ooh, pretty. beats a gnome any day :). She wrapped them up and brought them down to Capel for me and it was great fun unwrapping them. I loved the colours and shapes, none of which I had before.

Info from Byron is that it is a Defence Dept insulator from Maralinga which was the site of British nuclear tests in the 1950s. A sad and controversial piece of our history :8 .

When they dismantled the base at Maralinga they sold off everything and a lot of locals bought it up. Fortunately for me, Byron managed to get his hands on some and now I have one as well. I have to say that, although its quite plain, it is now my favourite due to its history. And I love that it looks like a Dalek.. you know, Exterminate!! Seems fitting really. :argh:

Two other good things about it. there are no issues with owning it and it doesnt glow in the dark, lol. So happily I have some beautiful new insulators and a cool Dalek. Thanks Byron, much appreciated. They have pride of place in my display.

Free milk. Yep in grade 3,1965 66 Funny how they stopped that. Probably realized that cows can pick up radiation from pastures.
I haven't heard that Maralinga was why we got the free milk. What have you heard about that ctxkid ?

the best way to track radiation that floats 1000's of k's is in butter fat :Y:

back in the day all cows had names and numbers so individual results of radiation content could be checked in their butter fat :(

we were the end result as the milk was then tested on us :awful:

I read a book on Maralinga. If I recall correctly They tracked the radioactive fallout by collecting & testing the thiroid glands of sheep and cattle slaughtered in abitoirs in the northern part of the country for the radioactive isotope, Iodine 131.

Prior to 1945 nobody had isotopes in their bodies, afterwards we've all got a little bit. Kids born these days have it good, no testing = no addition of nasties to the atmosphere. There is a great vid on YouTube showing all tests\blasts conducted after 1944, surprises everyone to see how many bombs have been 'dropped' on Australia. Love a good glass insulator, very cool.
