I did some training when I got the machine in Vict. Had a day of it and it was a waste of $120. Because I had my own machine the guy set it up handed it back and said you'll be right.....now you can detect with it. The next day in a different location, it screamed its head off so I played around with said settings and managed to quieten it down. I was lucky to have a competent 4500 owner in the camp ground that night and he gave me a run down on a few of the basic start points, which helped no end. My reason for asking is that I'll only have about 6hrs at Mt Crawford and I really don't want to have to stuff around switching settings. A starting point would be good. And all of that said doesn't demean what Nenad could show me but that's not going happen before Saturday.

I already have settings for a DD coil, the 17x13 Mono, the factory setting for the 11" mono and a couple of others but just wondered if settings for the sadie would be greatly different to factory ones.

Righto, this is what i found worked for me running the sadie on 4500. I run headphones

Mono, fixed, enhance.
Vol limit. 18
Gb type. General
Motion. Slow
Audio. Deep
Audio tone. 36
Signal 19
Target vol 12
Response. Inv (it works for me better)
Tracking. Slow
Rx and stab obviously changes, i try to get rx 7 to 9. I like it to run quiet, dont be afraid to go down to 7. Stab stays around 7 or 8.

It would be good to have a test target and try in the feild on the day. Then you can hear it pick it up and have confidence in the setting. Even a small lead shot.
This was picking up 0.1g gold no probs at 2"

Everyone please feel free to jump in of you have other ideas. Like i said thats what i like, maby i am just used to the sound and tone deep and inv make

Thanks Lord. Much appreciated. I have a couple of test nuggets I can use to get tuned in, [0.31g and 1.62g] I take them with every time I go out so they help greatly. I'll have a few other guys with me too who might like to use them too. Anyway thanks again, your a legend.

One lot of settings don't work in all areas, mineralisation, moisture,Emi etc vary from one field to another. Setting up with test nugget on site is really the best way. What area was Lord using these settings. You might not need to use Enhanced it depends on mineralisation. Using tracking or fixed? Small coils in mineralisation are generally better off running in tracking. Oh well good luck hope the settings work for you. Don't forget to use test nugget to check things out also once you have been detecting for a couple of hours check settings again with test nugget. The ground mineralisation can change and your machine setting might need a retuning. You also want to set your threshold up with test nugget set up too quiet you will miss targets , too loud the same. Set it up so you can hear the target the clearest.

Thanks for all your comments. I hit the ground today with the Sadie and it ran beautifully, no fussing at all. Still didn't find anything but hey, we were out in the fresh air, enjoying the 32 degrees at Mt Crawford and enjoying it with two new friends, who by the way are PA members. Now all I have to do is find some gold with it and it'll be specccciiaalllll !!!!!!!

Hmm if you have to run a higher threshold compared with headphones to get the booster to start amplifying then in theory very low signals will be hidden by the higher threshold.

I got a new detacc brand booster for the gp/sd series detectors late last year and it needed a fair bit more threshold to start making any noise when using the booster. There was a noticeable difference in signal brightness between headphones with no booster and the external speaker with the booster but i never fully tested to see if tiny signals actually disappeared.

I am about to bite the bullet and purchase a GPX 5000 after reading through as many of the posts I could, question is after looking at various retailer websites over the last few months deals come and go, previously a lot included a free training day, some didn't, now none of the dealers are advertising free training days, is it worth negotiating a training day into the deal or better off purchasing a training day/s with an independent trainer?

My opinion ...... The minelab training day was very basic and not worth worrying about whether it is included in your purchase package. To me nothing you couldn't work out on your own by reading the user guide a few times and playing with the machine. I would however shop around to get the best deal and see what they will throw in. I paid for an independent training day when I first started and found this far more useful. Good luck. It's an exciting time. Enjoy

My 4500 came with a training day, i tried to follow it up a coupple of times but there were "no upcomung dates scheduled"
I was not too worried about not getting one, i went to phasetech and did an independent 1 on 1 training day.
I would highly recommended doing that if you have not operated a detector (as i had not before. )
Dont stress about training not included, work on the best deal with extras like accessories

Also worth remembering going out with mates a few times will help immensely. Plus its better with freinds

Where are you located ? I can't tell you really where to go or buy from but can certainly steer you from a few that your best to not go near :N:
Training being worth it or not greatly depends on the person doing the training
There are dealers and then there are dealers some are great and others once they have your money really don't wish to speak with you :Y:

NSW = Central West Prospecting, Adelaide = Phase Technical both excellent to deal with before and after paying the hard earned.
Should have added both will usually ship for free anyways despite your location :D

GPX5000 ......................... great choice and very nice machine :Y:

Thanks Guys, I am in the Blue Mountains, western Sydney NSW, looking at CWS Mudgee, Miners Den Parramatta and Dect a Den Bateman Bay

CWPS Mudgee great choice ...................... the owner even gave me his private mobile so that any probs after hours I could contact him. :Y: That's the sort of service your after :Y: But give Phase Technical a call .................. I flew to Adelaide to pick up a machine from him that's the sort of service he offers and training second to non. Enjoy your new toy whichever way you go

Blatto,

I live in S.A., but do most of my detecting in the VIC GT. So I arranged to go to Maryborough for a few days when I bought my 5000. I bought it from Coiltek Gold Centre on the northern outskirts of town. I contacted them first to a. make sure they had the kit in stock and b. to book in to one of their training days, which is included in the deal. Also as I was buying other things i.e. coils and prospecting gear, I got good prices and a couple of freebies thrown in.

I arrived on the Thursday, picked up the detector Friday and did the training on the Saturday. I then spent a couple of more days playing with it before heading home.

I kind of figured that if I was going to get training, then get it in the area I'm going to be as S.A. does not have much to offer.

Another option and they are great guys to deal with.

What are some essential extras that should or need to be sourced first up as a beginner?
