Castlesreagh hwy north from sydney

Heading on the castlereagh hwy in August to head up to lightning ridge to do so repairs on the shack. Any spots worth a try on the way up to do with gold?? Gulgong comes up on google. I don't have the time to do around mudgee cos I will be driving straight thru but any little creeks to pass on the way up just to grab a bucket or 2 would be good.
