There are a lot of coal seams burning around the world, a few of which were not caused by humans. Marcasite, an iron sulphide, is common in coal and often ignites on exposure to air at surface, igniting the coal that it occurs in (brown coal in the Latrobe valley is full of it):

There is a hill in Ipswich, Qld, - Castle Hill, which we passes regularly when I was a boy. There was always smoke coming out of the earth on the hill. My father called it the dragons laire.
In reality, it was an underground burning coal mine with a great and sad story. See
