When out in the bush, how do people charge their AA, C or battery packs. I know there are those portable 12V chargers with USB, 12V ciggy slots, LED lights, etc on top....but i can't think what there called or where to find them?

Any advise on a brand or link to them?

Thanks

Thanks guys, I have a power bank I always carry with me in my back pack. I have a SDC so I want to charge the battery at night with ciggy adaptor, I don't want to use the car one as I don't want to be stranded with a flat battery, I know there are 12V jump starter unit's that come with a battery but also have provision to charge via USB, 12V and also has 240v plug which you can run an invertor off. I just don't k ow what to google or look up.

Jaro,s, I reckon they've added one zero to many, 10,000 not 100,000. There are heaps of similar products at around the same price.
Only good for giving wireless headphones and transmitter a quick charge during a lunch break, or maybe the phone, not jump start a car or charge a tector....

Mine wasn't a cheapie and has been a lifesaver a few times when i have a flat battery after my wife accidentally leaves an LED light bar turned on.

Errr...to avoid confusion, it is rated @ 100A (1000mAh = 1A, therefore 100,000mAh = 100A)

Mick64..... a bit dearer 'intial outlay', but longer life and more 'robust' imo, is for a dual battery car set-up, except the second battery is a gel-cell long-life. You just have to get into the habit of switching between the two for their own specific use. The primary battery is only for engine cranking/start-up & vehicle use.

The back-up gets continual charge when not in use, and comes into play once you park up for detecting/camping/partying etc....

I also had a three stage isolator, so when i turned in for the night, i could put both batteries into a stasis state by isolating both.

Worked for me for years in my old cruiser...barely any maintenance, just pull up, switch isolator, plug in device and go. :D

That way, you don't have to have the keys in the ignition for 'Acc' operation through the ciggy ( a fused direct lead wired from the gel cell rather than through the Acc fused line) outlet. Means you can be charging in the 'locked' car and detecting at the same time.

Just charge it from your car battery and buy one of these and put it in your glove box.

It will start your car easily if you happen to drain your starting battery.

Charging from the ciggy outlet alone requires keys in the ignition and turned to 'Acc.'.....don't know where you are, but be fegged if i will walk away from my car unlocked and keys in ignition. (yeah, could have a spare key, but it still leaves keys in ignition in locked car, thief won't care about your 'window' for a free car and 'kit'...)

Just my thoughts...ymmv. :)

I carry enough batteries to last a day and only recharge overnight so it is not a problem for me.

We all have differing needs re charging and even more in what we have to charge with. Broken down and not by any means all;

What to charge;

  • 5 VDC USB Devices, such as mobile phone, GPS, tablets, Ipod etc[/*]
  • 12 VDC such as torches, auxiliary batteries etc[/*]
  • 240 VDC chargers, such as AA, AAA, C & D cell rechargeable batteries, Detector chargers, Laptops etc.[/*]

The methods of charging each varies, here are some options;

Most 5VDC USB devices are very low current (wattage) and do not use much power and are easily charged from a cigarette socket plug in USB charger. They have inbuilt voltage reduction from your vehicles 12V system down to 5V. However, try to buy a decent one as the voltage regulation and spike protection will be better.

Again, most 12V devices are low load (I'll include 6V as well) and most come with a 12V cig plug charger i.e. GPX detector batteries and can again be charged from the car system.

Warning - It is safer to do both the above charging whilst driving if you only have the vehicle start battery, to prevent flattening it i.e. if left charging overnight.

Not so risky if you are tapping power from a decent sized auxiliary that is isolated from the main.

Next post - 240 charging.
