Any ideas what it could be? It was several inches underground in between some tree roots. No rust at all. Was at oallen ford near shoalhaven

looks like a brass bar used for keyways with grub screw marks, I'd say that ground was once tilled and its fallen from someones tractor or implement. Maybe go ask the landowner, he's probably been looking for it for yonks
 
Need more photos from different angles, sizes width, length, depth. Whatever it is it might be a fresh deposit from recent flood events. Being found at several inches in depth doesn't exclude it as a recent deposit, many tonnes of gravel has been moved in recent floods.
 
I'm 90% sure that is key steel (aka bright bar) like someone has suggested, those are drill marks. I think macca might be onto it too, someone has made a home made depth gauge with key steel.

Measure it, I would say either 3/8" or 1/2"
