Thanks fellas, it looked awesome in the bottom of the hole as it was being excavated, but alas I had no camera at moment,.. only the phone, and the lense is all worn and grainy from being in my treasure hunter pockets rolling around with either beach sand or dirt,.. so its less than useless for that job at all. Would have been a nice shot to add to the thread.

Another Lonestar to add to the collection, at least the grip is built into this one, so it looks reasonable complete. :)

It's pretty heavy at the moment, as the inside is still full of mud,... still feels good to hold in your hand, just leaves the little finger swinging free for my sized mitt, I thought it was going to come out perfect and was exited at the thought of my third hand gun over a fairly short time span as usualy it's just parts or it'll be a gun with lots of bits broken off.

Got out today while I took the family to the beach for lunch, remote beach had ripped a bit so I hit it hard, no gold, but, ohh soo close(meaning lead).
But no GOLD(darn).
Lots of black sand and lead.

Note the brissie bitter pull tab(old stuff there )
And the Northern Territory connection( pin)
Still only managed $4.27, and 4 bullet shells( a few of which were on the surface).
Still don't have a clue where URLDUNDA is(except that it's in the Northern Territory).

wow... and I found a pin from almost nowhere. That's great!
Thanks for that gtol29.

Here are a few close ups of that ring,.. its a black cab of some sort(I know not what).
Had one of the boys divers holding it up in the sunlight for me for a few of the shots.

The sunlight follows across the stone as you turn it.
One of the photos went a bit funny on me.

I don't know what that was about,.. I think it was out of focus a bit,... I have the skull ring pieces in salt and vinegar to see if the sand will let go(it's only plated so I have to be care full or it'll wreck the broken ring,..ha)

And here is that broken skull ring after a soak over night in CLR and a bit of a pick clean as well,.... you can tell it's just plated.
1423525574_sam_8968.jpg

Maybe it is an old Phantom ring.

I was clearing away the scrap metal from the photo shoot and noticed that the hook and sinker were joined by thread instead of fishing line,.. on closer inspection I found the bit of shell tied on as an old type of lure,... has anyone else come across this type of thing before, and should I be mounting this in a frame one day ?

Could the shell have been a slice of cuttlefish, attached as bait, is is it too hard for that to be the source?

Rob.

Hi PabloP,. too hard to be cuttlefish, but on closer inspection it could perhaps be bone,... here are a few closer up shots.

It's got me, but someone that knows about animals and bones may know, e.g. could even be a piece of chicken, or seagull, etc.

To help to age it have you thought about the nature of the string and its possible origin, as it looks in reasonable nick. Could have been kids just experimenting with a simple home made fishing kit, etc.

Let us know what you find out.

Rob

Well the beach had ripped about two and a half feet deeper and the sinker has a good coating of lead oxidization to add to the fact that the hook has undergone quite a substantial breakdown itself and has lost its tip completely, the string however has held its own fairly well.
I'll post a picky of the end of the string after tea.

Here we go,.. I'd say it looks like a synthetic fibre, but I'd probably have to put a flame next to the end in the second photo, just to be sure, to see if it wants to melt or burn.

1423567048_sam_9001.jpg

I'd think that if it was a hemp fibre it would have broken down and rotted along the way.
And here we go,... It only took a bit of a flame and they melted back, so, I think we'll go with synthetic on this one.

Which just leaves us with the bone( if it is bone) and what were they fishing for with a bone and a bit of meat with a hook trailing along behind, is it a poor mans lure or is it something that is species specific in the hunt for flesh to ingest,... maybe flathead would take that sort of thing as a nice looking feed if the flesh was fresh and bloody.

They're all through the loupe with the Samsung ES30, I used a torch with no flash for the last three photos.

Got the camera working ;) ... Great pics

possibly a birds leg bone. More than likely a bird got tangled in it and lived a horrible life with that attached to its legs, until it died.
Ive seen this too much here (Ibis) very sad to see.
