Hi guys.

Anyone know where I can get a heap of cheap facet grade smoky or clear quartz? Will be used for faceting practice. I don't want to try with good stuff just yet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your local lapidary club is a good way to start.
Otherwise, go for the web, quartz isn't worth much.

If you are in Sydney, I have some clear transparent quartz I can spare.

You can also use TV glass from old TV.

Ah, the good old "tv-ite" :)

I'm still on my first faceted stone - a piece of smokey - but I've tried to cab some glass before, an old bottle stopper. It's pretty soft and little chips fly everywhere - never do it without safety glasses!

My first half dozen stone cut were awanite, great stuff to practice on, if yo can get hold of an old black and white it gives a very light purple hue. I've got some left down at the lapidary club here in Launceston, I could send you some if you'd like. :)

It is surprisingly brilliant when cut, I have been told its partly due to the very high grade silica used and the radiation saturation. (Will stand corrected though)

Thanks for the offers everyone. I have tried the tv glass a few times it turns out quite nice for what it is.

I dont facet but some people at my club were talking about a company called Jewel Electronics in the USA. Was told they sell cheap assorted bags of coloured synthetic rough. They also have optic glass in huge sizes like the size of a lawn bowl!

Not sure how far you are happy to travel or where your located but if you want to dig your own Quartz then from Mt Hope go south a few hundred metres then turn east on the sealed road for 1km. stop and walk 300 metres north and dig to your heart content. reasonable amounts of clear quartz can be found.
I have been tumbling a bit lately and will most likely be back there next week to get more.
You will need a sturdy pick and shovel
Cheers
