I've been detecting on NSW beaches for a couple of years now but always wondered whether or not council's permission is required to do so.

I have been approached by surf life savers once or twice but this is usually to ask if I found anything and have a quick chat.

The way I see it I'm doing council a favor anyway by taking away junk metal, nails, hair pins and all that. I also hand in any keys that I find.

Also is it true that detecting is banned on some Australian beaches?

As long as you aren't annoying anyone of breaking any laws it shouldn't be a problem. I guess certain councils could put such as restriction in place but enforcing it might be a little difficult.

Lol, you know last night I dug up a can about a full arm length deep.

Yeah I had a hunch it was a can from the get go but couldn't resist digging it up.

I guess i'll just keep doing it until i'm told otherwise. Hey nugget where abouts do you go?

I did once phone my council & askedat first their parks & reserve officer said no until I explained that I'm do them a favour by picking up all rubbish including possible suringes & disposing of it allin an apropriate manner. I also asured her that I do no perminant damage & you can't tell I've been their. She then said Oh that OK. Since then I have not asked again for permission at any Public park, Beach, Playground in any City or Town.
I will add the only comment I have ever recieved on more than one occassion is how good a job I am doing at cleaning and have you found much.

We must ask for permission on all private land. I have asked a Horse racecourse for permission in which they have said it's Ok as long as not on actual track. Racecourse's are private & you will need permission, most are kept locked.
