G'day Dean,
The photo's turned out very well from our little trip on Saturday,
I really enjoyed the day once again and I'm looking forward
to the next adventure soon.
We have quite a few more projects to catch up on now, and so
few days left in the year.
Once again mate, great photo's.
Cheers Steve

more great pics Dean65

those walls sure are white...is it pipeclay? or is it just the photo?

any evidence of what exactly they were digging out?

cheers

G'day Dean,
Great photo's mate, they turned out better than you
expected once again.
Top work :)
G'day MJB,
It's mostly rock in that tunnel but the light for taking the
photo's made it look that way.
Where you can see the two tunnels there is quartz in
there so I'm guessing they were chasing the yellow
stuff.
Cheers Steve

It sure is MJB,
I have been doing this on an off for over 30 years and
always approach every lead with safety in mind.
Some leads are just to dangerous to proceed and will
never be visited again.
One in particular had a lot of iron ore in the roof and over
time oxidised and split the rock causing massive boulders
to fall into the lead.
This particular mine has at least 7 levels so I was greatly
disappointed to find out how dangerous it's condition was.
But I'm still alive today.
Safety first and enjoy life.
Cheers Steve . ;)

Its very inspiring stuff and good to hear you always have safety in mind.

I would love to go down in there, all those old timbers and ladders put up by the old timers look unreal. It interests me to see if they left a little ore behind so you can get a bit of an understanding of what type of rock was carrying in the gold....I would of course be tempted to take some, crush it up and see for myself too :D

I went in one near beechworth called the Wallaby mine years ago but that had nothing on the ones you guys go in. It had a big stope that went to the surface and another drive that went in straight for another 50m or so from memory before it stopped. It would be great to know what their thinking was and why they put tunnels where they did.

Thanks Steve, look forward to seeing more.

Cheers

Your welcome mate,
Dean and I have a few more projects in the pipeline
which we will most likely get to before the years end,
I love his photo's as they give others a real sense of
what is like down there which might otherwise be
unknown to most.
Cheers Steve

Someone sent this photo to me. The mine is near Blackwood. The poppet head looks very modern and the winch is still in place. Does anyone have further details ?

Spent sometime over the weekend looking for an old tunnel near Jasper Hill Ballarat. Sadly, I was not able to find what I was looking for as the valley I needed was too overgrown with blackberries and gorse bushes. Managed to find this very short tunnel nearby.

That is unreal...it makes you wonder how many old timers fell to the bottom whilst working under candlelight

Found this old silted up tunnel today in North Ballarat just as the rain started. Looks to be blocked inside. There is another tunnel nearby with the entrance covered by gorse bushes that will require pruning before entrance can be achieved.
