Nothing new there. Gold has been leached from pyrite by roasting and chlorination processes (various ) since the 1880s, Wallaces Bethanga goldmines and processing plant being a noteable site. Also The Dart River LaMascote mine and processing plant in the Upper Dart River.
 
Yes, significant amounts of gold have always been produced from pyrite. Probably most of USA gold production (and it is about the world's fourth largest producer, at hundreds of tonnes of gold per year).

That is not exactly what the article is saying - it is talking about gold grains in pyrite but invisible gold in pyrite (the USA gold is largely invisible) - and that they have found a type of invisible gold different to the invisible gold we already know about. Most of the gold production from Nevada is invisible in pyrite, and Nevada produces around 180 tonnes of gold per year (78% of USA gold production).

Most Bethanga and Dart River gold is visible gold, but a lot of it is locked as gold grains within pyrite.
