Plenty of people have started out with or just used a cheap detector for fun.
Aldi occasionally have some for sale that members here have done ok with: https://www.prospectingaustralia.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=4115
This one seems to be fairly similar: https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-300mm-deep-target-waterproof-metal-detector-kogan/

You just need to keep in mind it's limitations over more expensive detectors (i.e. discrimination will likely be shite, won't handle wet sand etc.) & it could still be fun in parks, on dry sand etc. It's a cheap way to see if the hobby is for you or not & if you decide it is then you can look at something more expensive later on. You might even recover enough to part cover an upgrade?
Read Heatho's posts on the Aldi machine!

My first ever detector was a Tandy special, great little toy that could beep on lots of things.

I guess for this price, you won't lose any sleep over it
