This was at a garage sale today and is something i never seen before.

I was told they called it a winara or winera or something similar.

A very interesting piece of old equipment.

It has a hopper up the top , a big sluice set up and possible a shaker system in the middle of it and what looks like a trommel on one end with big pulleys on the outside to run it off an engine.

How old would it be ? Gold rush era ,perhaps ?

Sorry Manpa,

I will trump that, I believe it is a grape crusher, that has a sceen to remove the stalks.

Also it is likely that it was imported into Aus, the name 'winera' suggested relates to that, I have seen and used the top part
also with a wooden roller/crusher, my father inlaw still uses one. Two weeks ago last time.

Fill the hopper with grapes, run the machine and grapes are pulled down and gently crushed rather than chopped with the stalks,
as the crushed grapes move down to the screen, it removes the majority of the stalk bits which are seperated and then 'pressed'
to remove the juice, and that juice is added to the first crush product.

Stalks and skins can be disposed of, thrown into the compost, or even mixed with water, some sugar and yeast to ferment and make Grappa O:)

Dont get me started with home made wine, each region makes it differently.

Stock footage, but pretty close to the inlaws gear.

It's a lovely old piece of history and should be in a museum, I reckon.

Thanks for posting, just starting! :)

Cheers,

No worries ,

Megsy.

We learn something new every day .

It got sold for $150 . I thought they should have got more for it , but they just wanted it gone.

It would weigh a fair bit ,too.
