The maps on this site are doing my head in. The Nundle Map shows you can only prospect in Nundle State Forest, and not Hanging Rock, and the Hanging Rock map says only Hanging Rock, and not Nundle Forest. Am I not reading these correctly? Is prospecting allowed anywhere inside the green border regardless of horizontal grey shading?

Appreciate any enlightenment.

What maps are you using? Old pdf maps?
You should be using the ArcGIS map on the site as it's the most up to date.
The grey diagonal line mean Hanging Rock is under an EL but it doesn't matter as the Orange shading means it's within a Fossicking District. You don't need EL holder permission within Fossicking Districts.
You need to keep out of the exclusion zones though (pink or blue diagonal lines) without permission:

In a Fossicking District where a Exploration Lease exists it's probably less confusing to turn the minerals layer off. Obviously though if it's a Mining Lease then it will still be off limits without the Leaseholders permission.
You can cross check for EL's or ML's on Minview.

The old pdf maps have been removed from the FCNSW website & the fossicking maps link should take you here:
https://fcnsw.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=db08e563e1b6403fabde1ce901389fa2

The problem is there is an archive site or sites on the interweb with the pdf files (not FCNSW site/s) & also people have their own downloads of them that they share.
Using them is fine but they need to be checked against the online map information for currency as well as here: https://www.forestrycorporation.com.au/visit/closures
Plus locally things can change prior to the online map information being updated so you need to follow any FCNSW signage on site.
