Hi all

After some advice if anyone has or is using ear phones/ear buds with their detector I'm not keen on the head phones big bulky and really need to wear a good wide brim hat.

I have searched not much comes up for metal detecting and I know a few detecting shops sell under chin era buds for about $80.00 I thought if Im going to do this I would certainly get a good pair.

Q Can I buy any ear phone and change the jack
Q Is there a real difference between the audio sound that I would hear with a better pair that was made for music

Totally lost on this Google has let me down no information comes up on ear phones for metal detecting. 8.(

I have a 4800

Does your detector have volume control? Earbuds work, but seldom have long enough cords, and would fall out easily. Slimmer backphones...headphones with smaller muffs, and wrap around the back of the neck would be the way to go. Plug adapters let you use small, or large socket plugs.

Hi KM

I also do not like over ear headphones and have used under chins and earbuds for some time now , Initially I used and sometimes still do the Jack Lange earphones which can be found on EBay for about $60 they in my opinion are excellent and most of my gold has been found with them , they do not need an adaptor as they come with a 6.35 mm plug unless you use an SDC as I do then you need an adaptor from Phase Tech , one of the site sponsors here. I have done extensive testing with four or five types of earbuds and a fair bit of technical research and from what I have learned it comes down to impedance and the size of the driver in the earbuds not necessarily the Db output , the OHM output is what you are after as clarity is the issue. Most over ear headphones are 100 Ohm where most earbuds are only 10 to 15 OHM but still work Ok to my ear. As I have moved to an Avantree Bluetooth cable free setup on the SDC the 3.5 mm plug of the earbuds goes straight to a receiver kept in my top pocket and I find this ideal with no lag at all.I am waiting on delivery of a specialised 45 OHM earbud set which are quite expensive at $80 but all reports are excellent for gold detecting I will attempt to post below. These can also be found on EBay search under Havi earphones.

Hope this helps and makes sense

Hi k-m I detect for gold and I do not like the bulky head phone especially in the summer ,I have been using a pair of Koss head phones that just clip over your ears they have been used for a few years with no troubles ,I must say the wires are light so you must take care of them. The price was around $30 you do not have to alter at plug there is a adaptor you can get 3/16 to 1/4 they are cheap item number 301653304958 these are on ebay regards john :)

I'd be grateful if you could direct me in getting that Avantree Bluetooth set up for my TDI-SL. I'm finding the headphone set-up is really getting to be pre-historic. At least for me it is.

I bought a single muff headphone and it had a 2.5ml? jack. I bought a 6 ml jack that accomodates the 2.5 ml jack on the headphone(s). Got it from Jaycar. $5.

I bought under chin ear phones 3 yrs ago at Coiltek Maryborough for use with my then Eureka Gold detector. I found them annoying to use and too little cable. They came with a volume control.

However, I now run a GPX5000, the battery has an amplifier which when using a speaker is in circuit and when using earphones is not. The difference being the way the 6mm jack plug is wired. I don't know how the earbuds are wired, wasn't happy with them and so have never used them on the 5000.

The other thing I would also be concerned about is the impedance of the ear buds matching the output of whatever detector they are run on. Mismatch can cause a hum, static or interference that make using them difficult.

Regardless of your eventual purchase, take your detector with you and try before you buy........

I prefer to use the Koss Headphones and on occasion a modified speaker on my harness. The mod is - I installed a small micro toggle switch to the top of the speaker box, like Johnathan Porter uses in his DVDs. It is especially useful if I want to go back to the car briefly or when I'm using my Pro Find pin pointer. Instead of getting huge feedback, I just flick the switch off. No noise = no feedback.

Obviously the large metallic bulk of a car will set off the detector, so will a pin pointer when used near the detector.

Just went looking for the Jack Langes on EBay , looks like he does not sell on there anymore but they are available here

http://goldhunterdetectors.com.au/detectors-and-equipment/detector-headphones/

Perhaps a call to them to see if they are suited to a 4800 if you are interested as I have only used them on an SDC

The new model which I have also come with a volume control

Cheers

Just spoke with Wendy at GHDs. The phones cost $55 plus $6.95 postage.

They have them listed on eBay but there was some issue with them not being visible there and Wendy is in the throes of having them relisted.

Any reason why a high quality inner ear bud type head phone wouldn't work? Something from senheizer or Sony in the $100 price bracket. Is there a technical reason why these won't work?

Question 1, yes but it is better to buy short extension cord with right plug and socket. Like 1/4 inch jack to 3.5 mm socket.
Question 2, no. If the earphones are good enough for Hi Fi, they are more then adequate for the detector,

I use small PLL FM transmitter to send audio from the detectors to my S2 Galaxy phone and supplied earphones on X terra 705 and on White's SPP detectors. It works much better then build in speakers in both cases.

Yes aussieroger I have, lots of info here and technical stuff but most people are talking about cheaper headphones eg. Sub $80, but having been involved in the sound industry for over 30 years I thought that maybe the detector output was causing some type of interference with higher quality inner ear type head phones which generally will cover a very wide spectrum of the sound wave being emitted. But having read the last post my idea of using good quality music specific inner ear phones seems to be the correct and simple answer. Cheers

Hi All

Thanks for all the information, I have been looking at a couple of options and will test a few different things on the week end.

I have a buddy that is using Shure SE-215CL earphones, very high quality yet lightweight in ear moniters. He likes them.

They look good, but for $150 plus postage they'd want to be.

However, the problem remains having to have a lead from the control box to the head.

WiFi please.
