Stuffed a good minelab battery today. Was about to cross a small creek and thought I'd unplug the detector from the battery and put the lead (still attached to the battery in the backpack) in my pocket. Done this hundreds of times before without a problem but somehow touched the keys/mobile phone in my pocket. Nice short circuit sound through the headphones. One stuffed battery. The upside... looks like i can justify a wireless setup.

Crickey ...... I do that all the time. Won't from now on.
Sorry for your loss of battery, but thanks for sharing so others don't fall in to the same trap. Cheers Dignit

Just a thought Jin you probably have not hurt the battery, you have most likely blown the inbuilt booster it may still work ok with a rooster booster. Bad Luck mate.

The battery is fine, charged up ok. I'm not sure if a Rooster booster would override the problems with the audio quality the battery seems to have.
Sent a message to Minelab and they said: "It sounds as if you may have taken the Audio stage out". When I plug in the external speaker it is very quiet, which makes me think the amp is shot. When headphones are plugged in the sound loudness is normal but is all scratchy and sort of echos. Probably not the best way to describe the sound but the detectors not usable the way it sounds now. Wish I understood electrics a bit better because Minelab said its only $5 in parts to fix, but labour and postage costs make me wonder if its worth it.

Not good Jim, I was thinking from your first post that it may be more of just a battery gone with the short, seen it before a few times now where some components overload. What model detector? a member here does repairs in Geelong who may be able to help, but my memory can't pull his name. Replacements would be cheap
