Just had a look at the Parks Victoria site http://parkweb.vic.gov.au/explore/parks/chiltern-mt-pilot-national-park and there is an icon in the legend showing fossicking for gold.

I guess that is all the permission you need.

It is only 6 hours from home, would be ok for a few days away I guess.

I'd have to agree: Prospecting is permitted in designated areas. Prospectors must hold a current Miner's Right. Refer to the Prospecting Area map for more information.

The prospecting area is along woolshed crk between the falls & eldorado & is really only good for pans sluices etc.
The area north of chiltern is a no go for any form of prospecting as this was the original area of the chiltern NP.
When the park was extended to include the Mt pilot & beechworth multipurpose park much lobbying was done to get prospecting allowed in the old section as well as the new area. But the greenys won that battle with the help of PARKS VIC. The same help wasn't forthcoming for the prospectors, as well as locals who still needed to heat there homes with wood.
