From "The Cattle King" Idriess.

A chance meeting with Jimmy Nicholas on a mail coach from Broken hill to Terowie tin field Kidman agreed to supply horses for the business if Nicholas secured the contracts. Nicholas had information regarding the richness of the silver in the Broken hill and anticipated the rush and could see the requirements for transport and thus they formed a mail and passenger service second only to the famous Cobb and Co.
As time went on , the Kidman Brothers and Nicholas linked up town after town, until their coaches connected western NSW from Hungerford on the Qld boarder to Wentworth on the Vic boarder then west and across the SA boarder to Morgan a distance of 700 miles.

William Buckley

correct

every account found on the internet is slightly different in the details but the basic story is he was tried and found guilty of stealing a bolt of cotton (or several) he claimed he was carrying it for a lady who ask for assistance.

He was sentenced to death by hanging which was commuted to transportation for life and sailed on H.M.S Calcutta which was destined to establish a settlement at Port Phillip

a settlement was established at Sullivan's Bay (-38.347800, 144.760303) near Sorrento.
on the 27th December 1803 Buckley and some others (3-15 depending on which account of the story you read) escaped, 1 or more were shot whilst escaping.

Buckley and 2 others stayed together and within 3 days were walking on the beaches of what is now called Corio Bay.

Some reports have the group walking right the way around the bay some 160km the more likely scenario is they swam the Port Phillip heads

The heads are only 1 mile across but they are a treacherous mile , the tide run there is so fast the water "boils" and the stream is 6 Knots normally and up to 9 Knots in extreme conditions this is caused by the whole of the bay draining through such a small opening slack water happens 3 hours before and after the high tide when the water levels outside the bay and inside coincide and are short compared to most other places

Buckley's companions turned back after some time and were never heard of again.
Buckley was discovered by local aborigines and he was holding a part of a spear he had found sticking in the ground which unbeknown to him had been marking the grave of one of the tribes elders, they thought he was the reincarnation of their elder and immediately accepted him as such.

The Sullivan's Bay settlement packed up in 1804 and went and settled Hobart.

Buckley lived with the aborigines for the next 32 years as part of the tribe learning the language and how to survive in the "Harsh country"

officially he was considered dead so no one thought to look for him
In 1835 Buckley became aware of John Batman's camp and eventually introduced himself sort of (32 years of not speaking English he had trouble remembering how). After establishing Buckley's identity and his Knowledge of the Aboriginal culture and language, Batman applied for and received a full pardon for Buckley so he could assist with the establishment of what is now Melbourne.

Swimming The Rip (Port Phillip Heads) and surviving 32 years in "untamed land" led to the expression "Buckley's chance" meaning you have very slim to no chance.

He walked around as this has already been proven as john batman found their cooking gear buried by the yarra i think his 2 companions were killed around the brighton area as 2 white skeletons were found there in 1840

In early victorian history what were the biggest buildings in most large country towns and Melbourne used for, and they were not churches
