looks like a bit or gallena in the last pic maybe?? but that would make it heavier , where waas it found?

Very much like volcanic glass.
 
Pretty sure it's ironstone based. That region and further north at Wave Hill this ironstone forms Staurolites, which have a glazed surface formed from intrusion of either manganese, zinc or aluminium oxide. They're mainly associated with the abundant schist ranges in that region. If he has them close by, tell him to keep a look out for "Maltese Crosses", which are a much sought after stone in that region.
