Coffs Harbour NSW information and questions

Lived and worked in the Coffs area in the 1960's. Made friends with a Bert MacAnally who had brothers working a mine somewhere NW of Coramba. Between fishing trips we spent quite a bit of time panning the gullies around there, always coming home with enough to encourage us back later for more...

Someone is Selling an XW GTHO

Dunno about that xw gt. restoration. Missing the vac. ignition advance tube to the distributor and the oil pressure looks too low for a 351 v8

    Topaz?

I was going to say "side of your nose" but yep, topaz always feels colder, even after its been in your pocket. Nearly all the topaz I have seen has retained some remnant of the crystal shape with at least one flat side plus an indication of the flat cleavage plane Put my money on quartz

Sunny Corner NSW information and questions

Sadly Chris, there is nothing really new there. In the 1970's to late 80's we lived in Bathurst. In the mid 70's my mate and I were dredging, sluicing, panning, whatever in all those tucked away spots. To preserve the secrecy of our locations we always subscribed to the "LNT" principle (Leave...

    External speaker for gpx 4500

Quite simple really. Find a scrap UHF (usually the speaker will be still ok). Unsolder the terminals, remove mounting screws and carefully remove the speaker. I then made up a compact aluminium box (drilled holes through for sound to emit) to house and mount the speaker with a clip to attach to...

    External speaker for gpx 4500

Agree with you old hand. I made up a speaker from a defunct UHF transceiver which, when compared to the typical unit as supplied for the GPX range, has a far more crisp and identifiable response. Much prefer it over headphones in all circumstances. It also cost nothing too, which was an added...

What Car, what brands do you trust for the Outback?

As well as scammers, be very wary of ex mine vehicles which will be usually Landcruiser or Hilux. Many of these will have had prolonged exposure to a heavy salt laden environment which has a very corrosive impact on components. Unfortunately, Murphy's Law insists that the components affected...

    Back in the day!!!

Great couple of clips there Simmo, what a prospecting weapon a drone can be. "Back in the Day" (1970's) mate and I were full time sluicing on a creek system in NSW. We had an old petrol/kero Fordson bucket loader, the death trap one where a pull on the lever dropped the full bucket in one hit...

    How is this explained?

Another iteration of the novel was the virus being named "Gorki-400", a viral weapon created by the Russians. Pretty interesting all the same but more importantly one has to be concerned about the global ramifications of what is now happening. Is it too soon to be thinking about history and the...

Wet Prospecting Shovels - information and questions

I think that "shovel" may actually be a "spade"..... ie never call a "spade" a "shovel"?? Confusion will cause a "fracture" in any relationship.
