Whroo was there a town

Where was the town of Whroo, Going to Tatura this weekend, hope to get down that way on Saturday.

Thank you for the info, looks like there was a town. To look at the area today you would not think so.

The town was near where the information Center is now

Apparently when the gold rush ended and mining operations ceased, the buildings and houses were torn down and moved to a different location. Almost nothing is left these days. The cemetery is well worth a visit though - lots of history in there. I have also heard there was a Whroo golf course at some stage. No idea where it was though.

Is it Whroo Cemetery where the Olympic cyclist Oppermann is buried? I was there 30 years ago but my memory is fading a bit.

No Makka, Oppy's burial site is Altona Memorial Gardens in Laverton North. Your post sent me on a find and seek mission, I wish gold could be found that quick. Can only live in hope

From memory Oppy was born in or near Jamieson, Victoria. His father was a gold miner.
