BBC News says

"The bitingly cold temperatures have caused major problems across the energy sector in Texas. Wind turbines froze, as well as vital equipment at gas wells and in the nuclear industry. But because gas and other non-renewable energies contribute far more to the grid than wind power, particularly in winter, these shortages had a far greater impact on the system. So when critics pointed to a loss of nearly half of Texas's wind-energy capacity as a result of frozen turbines, they failed to point out double that amount was being lost from gas and other non-renewable supplies such as coal and nuclear.........on average, renewable energy sources - mostly wind - account for about 20% of its electricity supply. But the largest proportion comes from fossil fuels, as well as 10% from nuclear. On Tuesday, the state's principal energy supplier, the

Electricity Reliability Council of Texas (Ercot), said the freezing conditions had led to:

30GW being taken offline from gas, coal and nuclear sources
a 16GW loss in capacity in wind and other renewable energy supplies
And this, it said, had severely curtailed its ability to satisfy a peak demand of 69GW over the past few days - a surge even greater than anticipated.

In its plan for an extreme winter weather event, Ercot says it expects only 7% to be provided by wind energy. The company's Dan Woodfin said: "It appears that a lot of the generation that has gone offline today has been primarily due to issues on the natural gas system." The cold weather also affected a water system needed to run the South Texas Nuclear Power Station, causing one reactor to shut down".

We have friends there trying to keep livestock alive without electricity, liquid water, and with 2 inches of ice preventing them leaving the farm.

Miserable...

Many years ago had a friend from Minnesota, who told us,that they had to always carry candles and food in the car,for emergency in the cold weather.

As of Mid Day your Time on the 18/02/21 so far 21 people have died over there, 3 days ago they had their lowest temp since 1899 which was -2*f or -18.88*c which for extremely Cold for the state of Texas,

Further North In States like North Dakota and South Dakota they can see Temps of around -40/-50*f which is -45.5*c. But most of the US is getting covered in Snow at the moment It's just Southern States like Texas are not use to this type of weather so they don't have Emergency steps in place to deal with it,

Around 1999 Ish they changed the Wind chill conversion figures So In older TV documentaries where they state temps like 90*f below is more like -62*f below,

To get the modern accurate Temp Vs Windchill Conversion I use this Converter. and its worth saving to your favourites list.

And I use this to Covert the Temps from *F to *C.

In Texas now over 30 people have died and just make things worse they have had to cancel a lot of the Vaccine Centres, Seems like it's all going pear shaped, Poor Buggers.

Yeah they are in a mess over there,

They have been blaming the green energy IE wind and Solar, But as pointed out Greenland has wind and Solar energy and they don't have these issues with the Turbines freezing up, Now they are saying that they need to stick with using Coal and Oil powered power stations. which is rubbish because Greenland gets a lot colder than Texas.

It was -8/-9 here last week and they say it's going to be 17*c this weekend. :sunny: :sunny: :sunny:
