A simple to peform, put coin or gold in bag place under a 20L bucket, fill the bucket with dirt or sand till you can no longer get signal then take just enough out till you get signal again. If bucket isn't deep enough use plastic bin.

You should be able to measure how deep. Simple place strong torch on top of dirt & measure side of bucket where the light shines through bucket. Easy test for detector depth without digging holes.

This is also better than air test and will give the operater a great indication of performance of that detector in the field you can also vary targets if desired.

Great tip Dave. I believe air testing still has its place but as previously pointed out its not a true depth measurement.

The issue with both the bucket method and the air test method is that different soil and ground conditions can have an adverse effect of depth penetration, so even though the bucket method does use soil between the coil and target, it still cant be regarded as a true depth measurement but rather a rough indication.

Generally people air test to compare depth performance of one machine against another and not so much to determine true depth, and for comparison sake I believe its a simple and effective method.
