The first reported metal detector was in 1925 in the USA.
In Doug Stone's book " Metal Detecting For Gold and Relics " there is a photo on page 10 of an early detector . It was built in 1942 in Victoria . He states it is still in existence in Northern Victoria . Does any body know where it is now ? Some new photos ?
