Few days ago purchased a F1A4 for $500. Looks to be in 'as new' nick. I modded the detector by replacing the military coil connector with one that allows the use of any mono, or dd, that the 5k would run. Also replaced the headphone socket to a 'civvy' one to allow the use of any headphone or speaker. In fact, the only thing I kept 'original', to some degree (apart from the 2 mods), is the control unit. Did this by following the info in the DIY section. How cool is this forum? Thanks guys.
Have not installed a momentary switch to the handle, for GB, as yet. The plan was to hip or shoulder mount the control box so I'll simply use the switch on the control unit for now.
I've replaced the army shaft, handle and cuff with lighter upper and lower shafts, handle and cuff. Belt mounted the control unit so all I'm swinging is the shaft and coil. Maybe 3 lb in weight, if that. And I run a NF 12 X 7 mono coil. Using headphones with an adustable volume control has taken care of any issue of having your ears blown off when over a target. And a very simple solution around installing a volume control in the control box itself.
Out today, for the first walk since modded, and pinged this little .25 at about an inch.
These may be ex-military but with the right mods are proving surprisingly very capable. And VERY emi resistant.
