Yep, Heatho and BJ, that book will give you a wonderful first hand insight into your ancestor's experiences. I had a great great uncle who served at Gallipoli and I still have his medals.

Hi DrDuck, I remember reading the Desert Column as a boy many years ago and I have a vague memory of where he describes the heels of his boots being shot off as he lay prone on the slopes and how many bullets zipped inches from him on a regular basis, and his description of the soldiers infested with lice.
I might read the book again.

He's buried in row Q, Grave 84... Palestine. Beersheba War cemetery. cheers

Grand Father very rarely spoke about the great war.
Too hard for him to cope with and all he would say was, "You don't want to know about bloody war."
A man only did what he had too do.
.
Nearly up until the day he passed he would have shrapnel removed from his legs.

I was a young lad maybe 13 years old, I read a little through this It started to ring a bell, I was part of the creswick light horse brigade run by our local police Sargent Gary Chandler (not military as such) but a rememberance service to whom had served our country. I marched in the centenary of federation march through Melbourne I remmeber it very clealry I was pooper scooper duty in full uniform (I was a playing as a solider who was being ordered to this duty as I was not doing my duty) I must have been a little terror, that and probably because I've never been a great horse rider and gave a bag of manure to Steve bracks who was our premier at the time.

This book is a great read I'll have to read it again when I get the chance soon

Sorry to hear he never made it home BJ. Gives me goose bumps to know my great great grandfather very nearly did not after being shot in the Boer War, I wouldn't be here if he was shot much higher. He returned home unable to continue.

My great great uncle was wounded at Katia though recovered and returned for the battle of Beersheba. He did make it home though. He was quite a famous commander of I think 3 Light Horse battalions. I'm not going to say which ones or who he was though but he was well respected by the men he led into battle.
