I guess it wasn't too much different here 150 years ago. Of course the difference is that information is available by the authorities to help these people and the environment. Gold creates greed and crime even in our society so I doubt there's going to be much positive change in the foreseeable future of these people :/

I've put myself in danger digging deep holes many times, if the ground is dry and hard I don't worry about it.
But going deep if it's not hard rock like these people is full on.
It just tells me how bad things obviously are there.
There is obviously enough water to grow food but the hunger for something more drives them on..
