Lol, been looking at that pic for ages trying to figure out what your were looking at. Now that I know, yet I would be damned cautious, remembering how volatile these explosives are over time.

Good to see come con space people on here. The mortality rate for untrained rescuers is around 80%, unfortunately on numbers for untrained primary entrants.
I enter confined space without question, then I was trained and began training, no more random exploring. The gas released from pools is frequently hydrogen sulphide (rotten eggs) at higher concentrations undetectable by the nose and a quick death. For me not worth the risk.

20 years back an Irish, father, son & mother died while trying to clear a well on their property, all because of a dead rat.

Our laws came to prominence after a rescuerer died in the NT probably about 25 years ago. We now have an Australian Standard for confined space.

So think about the hazards before jumping into a water tank to muck it out or pay a pro to clear the tank. It is worth less than 10g of yellow, are you?

end of rant stay safe.
Barry :)

as discussed on another forum confined spaces require specialised equipment and training. Some gasses are odourless and you can be unconscious in 10 seconds, dead in 30 seconds. I have had extensive training in confined space rescue and entry, having worked on a rescue unit for close to twenty years, with VETAB qualifications. Seriously, a leaf blower?? sucking all the carbon monoxide from the motor and adding it to the mix of gasses already in the hole? Ignorance is not bliss... it can easily be deadly. I have had this discussion with HTY on another forum, and am saddened that he still feels the need to encourage others to engage in stupid risky behavior. People DO die, it just may not make the news. Old mines are exceptionally dangerous for many reasons, ground movement creating instability of the walls roof and floors, gasses, rotting timbers. HTY could not state what confined space training he has, because he does not have any. Little safety equipment, not even basics like a gas detector, which is a mandatory item. I hate to sound harsh but confined spaces CAN EASILY KILL YOU. Even a stormwater drain can hold deadly gasses and have been known to kill. I also forgot to mention, that others then have to risk their lives to attempt a rescue of anyone trapped or missing.

now 1st I DO NOT engage others to do what I do at all and second why would you bring it up on a new nice forum like this if you have all ready spoken to me about it on another one ???

I know the dangers quite well gas rotting wood and wood floors in tunnels covering a 40 od meter stope

I know what I do is sometimes highly dangerous but so is detecting on the surface like snake bite and a broken ley out the middle of no where and the list gos on

EVRYONE takes risks with different things its just how great a risk is that's the danger

im shore you have had many close calls I have too like axeing my knee when chopping wood and breaking my arm when a tree that I was cutting down landed on it what im trying to say is there is every day risks that are unexpected

I think it's time to close this thread. If there's a need - we'll re-open it but for now we'll let it rest.

Everyone has had their say & whether they agree or disagree with what HTY does - ultimately it's up to him what risks he (& many others) chooses to take - he & anyone else reading this thread/topic is now well aware of the dangers & repercussions it could have.
