I've done a bit of opal scratching on stations around quilpie when i was younger,, but now interested in trying to find some gold around the northern rivers nsw, i live in ballina, anyone similar nearby??

G'Day Tezza and Welcome mate.

As far as I know Gold occurred in the mouth of Ballina River and was mined from the sand as a result. Im not sure how you would go recovering any though as it was said to be very fine.

Evans Head had gold occurences in that Black Soil you find along the river, I cant recall how it was formed but it was mostly deep vein. Try your luck maybe across the bridge and up into the national park on the right along the river bank soils, you may find alluvial.

Ive never looked there myself but grew up in Casino for 14 years and looked it up recently out of curiousity.

Wow! That'd be great,, have been looking at those underflow sluices on YouTube,, might see if I can whip one up and give it a try,,, cheers!!

Hi Tezza,

Out towards Tenterfield you have the Timbarra River and Drake where a lot of scratching can be done

My dad grew up in Ballina as a kid and can remember the miners on the beach digging for the yella stuff. I not sure which beach it was though.
Just be aware of the places you can go around there. I don't see any reason to set up on a beach and dig as the next tide will wash away any trace that you were even there.
Just find out if you can dig.
As xobazzip has stated westward is pretty good always came home with something.
I live in Lennox for a while and Dad had property in Ballina, shame he sold it.
Good luck on your quest.
Cheers

just did a search in the dpt of minerals web site,, it shows a few reported sites of gold,, out of action atm with a crook back will defiantly be doing a search when i'm back on my pins,,,

Make a round trip, do Drake on your way through to Tenterfield, then shoot down to Glen Innes and Armidale for a few nice gemstones and head home with heavy pockets!

Hi Tezza and hi to everyone else. I also live in Ballina I've been doing a little fossicking around the area looking for some gold. Iam starting to think Drake would be a great spot to start. I work in the mining industry WA. FIFA that's enough to start a little gold fever, if you ever wont to swap a few ideas just let me Know.
cheers Wayneo
