I remember the old Everhot combustion stove we had. It never got cold as we had access to an enormous amount of wood, My father worked in a joinery and he bought a few big hessian sacks of the wood off cuts home every few days. We used to eat a lot of rice pudding and cakes of various sorts -home made of course coated with sugar.
Sweets from the shop were a rarity.
