luv the bell find just woundering the thing with the groves is a spoke spanner

I've found several of those things around the area, I think it may be a clock part as I am always finding bits and pieces of them - who knows.

The bell was a first for me, definitely the last thing I was expecting to find. I had just finished retrieving another target when I inadvertently swung the deus coil over a log just behind me, and momentarily picked up a faint high tone. I thought that was a bit strange considering my coil was a fair way off the ground, so I shifted the rotting log out of the way, dug down several inches, and there it was.

I don't think it's a bullock bell Atom, they are usually square shaped and have a loop on top to allow the bell to swing freely - more of a can than a bell if anything. Truth is it could have been for multiple uses, even possibly a maritime background. I am tempted to clean it, but a voice in my head says leave it in its original state with the green patina. :)

Finished my first night detect for a long time, the ground was sodden, and muddy hands, pinpointer and Deus was the order of the night. Didn't help that temps were at 2 degrees, but was pretty snug wearing thermals and a few layers of clothing.

Had a pretty good showing of commonwealth coinage, with 2 x 1919, 1915, 1924 pennies, and 2 x 1932 and I think a 1907 half penny. Silvers included a 1946 shilling, 1945 sixpence, and a Victorian 1887 threepence. The oddity for the night was a gold gilded pocket watch part made in Waltham, Massachusetts, with H.Korner stamp on the rear. Would have been nice to find the rest, as it would have been likely that the case would have been gold. ;)

I could tell I hadn't been night detecting for a while, as I Iost my Raptor digger on three seperate occasions, with only my pinpointer light available for locating it again! :|

Hey Goldpick, which of your two pinpointers do you prefer to use, the Whites or the Nocta ?

Mike.

unusual, a name so crudely stamped into a watch movement.

It is strange, maybe the part was used as some bling jewellery being gilded, who knows.

Mike.

I currently have four pinpointers, the older style Nokta ingested some moisture, so no longer have that. The main pinpointer I use is the waterproof Garrett AT Propointer, the Whites TRX is a backup, and the missus uses the Minelab Pro-find. Another detecting club member is using my Deteknix X-Pointer.

I don't use the TRX much these days, as the audio is very hard to hear with headphones on, and the LED light isn't really good enough for night work. :)

I was on my way to one of my usual haunts today, when I decided to veer off course and give another old site another go. Last year we visited this spot with the Explorer, and it didn't look real promising on an initial run over the area. As with my last few hunts, I decided to take a different course of action in exploring the outskirts of the site vs hitting the guts of it (usually the hardest hit by other detectorists). That proved to be a very good idea, as a multitude of targets were picked up, and in areas most likely neglected by other detectorist.

The coins found were all Victorian era, including a large 1853 half penny, 1864 half penny, 1844 sixpence, 1853 sixpence, and an 1862 threepence. Other finds include a Naval button, H.G Gardiner button from Bristol, pocket knife and a very small gold gilded pendant - looks a bit like a snake or rope tied in a knot.

The 1853 half penny was actually found in someone else's detector hole only 10m from my car. They had excavated an iron target out of the hole, but failed to recheck to see if there was a second target, hence the half penny was re-buried along with the iron. :D

Will definitely be heading back for another shot. :)

Great pics GP.

You get some nice old coins n relics. We don't get many that age. The odd Vicky penny is about it.

Thanks RJ, it does take a fair bit of effort to find them, and sometimes under some pretty horrid detecting conditions (lots of fallen branches and loose ground cover). A bit like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack in some respects.

By all rights you guys should have a lot older coinage than here in SA, considering our state was settled later on. Just need to find some older sites, maybe a bit out of town.

Another good assortment of finds
Was well worth the return visit and probably going back again ;)
I do envy your ground conditions , your coins survive very nicely
3 great early silvers and a couple more buttons for your collection

I agree. We should have some very old stuff in our area. Maybe it's deeper or we are missing out somehow.
