Where not to go

Hi
I have never been to Australia before and
I could use some advice were to travell.
As I want to go metaldetecting it
should ofcourse be some gold there

Im not after a specific spot as i fully
understand that noone wants to
share their secrets

But as I only can travell Jan-march
it could be helpfull to know wich
Territory that are best that time
of year and wich one to avoid.

Would appriciate help

Hi Swed...depending on how you can handle Heat & Humidity (this is our Summer time).....but for that time of year, there will be NO escaping temperature ranges daily of 35* plus and as much as 45* in some areas. Based on that, i'd advise early morning (up to about 11:00am) or late afternoon/evening detecting.

Perhaps either somewhere with lots of trees for shade.... or if night time detecting, open flatter areas. The Golden Triangle of Vic offers most of these scenario's... i can't speak for Western Australia or Queensland. Perhaps members from there can chime in.

Be aware you will need to get "permits" (Miners Right) in Victoria to Legally own the minerals once you have removed them from the soil.

Each area have their own rules and regulations that should be followed, and in the case of Western Australia, there are added processes which can take a few months to have all the necessary "permits".

Victoria's Golden Triangle makes good sense at that time of year!

Be careful of the dangers present anywhere you travel in our Sunburnt Country!

Golden Triangle, Victoria would be the best place to go, but like mentioned above, daytime temps in some area's can be pretty hot, normally the further south you are the little cooler it will be. One problem Victoria has though at that time of year is sometimes we have extremely bad wild fires, mostly towards the north east & central east of the state so the Golden Triangle is normally ok as its mostly west, but the fires can happen anywhere any time so you have to plan ahead & keep an eye on conditions. Snakes at that time of year are also out, & with the most venomous snakes in the world you need to be careful, best bet would be to organise a meet up with a forum member from the area you would like to go as that way you will be much safer.
I don't want to frighten you off but Australia, & specially the Australian bush & outback, can be a very dangerous place if you're not prepared.

Hi again Swed.. as an addendum to my above post..those posted temperatures are in Celsius not Fahrenheit (for clarity's sake as it may have been obvious,but i don't wish to be oblique).

I will also 2nd ozzii's post....lots of natural dangers to be aware of (snakes, angry landowners, spiders etc) and once you settle on an area, put out a call from local members of that area for some guidance or even help. Getting a "Miners Right" can be done on the spot once your here (from local Dept's or Detector Shops) so that is not something to be too concerned about until you are here, but Western Australia can take time, plus you will need landowners permission in writing etc etc (just a slower and time consuming process).

Have plenty of rations (keep well watered) for your daily excursions, have decent comm's and a GPS as it is a BIG country and getting lost can happen in a heartbeat when , regardless of where you turn it all looks the same. Can be done alone if an experienced explorer, but if this is your first real adventure, i'd call on local help to accompany you, or have back up plans in case things go pear shape.

Also, depending on where you choose, once you have decided, you can then do a google search for Detector shops in the area and email them for an idea of support they may have in regards to tours/detector spares/accommodations/local goldfields info etc.

Do some searches for "Goldfields of Australia" and follow up with getting an idea of the available services as some are remote compared to others. Then you can have an idea of which area most suits your individual requirements. If you have any queries, feel free to continue asking here for the answers too.

As a side note, I would also recommend not detecting at night unless you have familliarised yourself thoroughly during daylight hours with the area you wish to detect. Don't go wondering around. Pick a safe area and work it thoroughly. Even seemingly innocuous Mullock heaps can be dangerous.

Agree that Victoria would be the go..........you get to see a city comparable to Sydney yet are so close to some very productive goldfields. As long as you finish detecting by about midday if its hot..... you wont die of heat stroke! A hire car for a day or 2, gold equipment as required and a cheap country pub and you're done! When you get tired of looking for gold you can be back in the big smoke very quickly.......a world class city I lived in Melbourne for a few years and although I'm back in Sydney, still miss the nightlife and diverse restaurants and culture. And don't worry, we have lots of snakes but u just have to step over them, not on them and ur ok!

Thanks for the advice everyone
will check out the Victoria area.

Melbourne seems like a nice place
to start of from maybe a week
or 2 to adapt to the weather
(will be comming from -20 deg C).

And with all stories about the snakes ,
bushfires and more I might end up
at the Casino instead, putting all my
travell money on red instead.
(would probably be a smarter
investment )

Will probably take some kind of
tour the first times and take it
from there. Maybe put out a post
here in the forum. Could be some
oldtimer out there that need a
tagalong for safety

My first investment anyway
will be a handheld GPS.

Hey Swed... well if ya end up running alongside a local (or own a smarty phone) you won't need to spend $$$ on a GPS.

If ya end up around the GT, let me know, I have a cpl i don't even use, so save ya money. Mind you, my area is a lottt quieter than Melbourne is. Luck will be better on the ground buddy, at least there ya have a chance....with the Casino, the house ALWAYS wins....

As for tours...ya could do that, but i'm sure some from here would be only too happy to take ya out for the experience. Again, save some $$$.

I went through Marcia and Swed mate, go south at that time of year for sure.

If your ever Here in our winter Months, then up north here is Paradise,
Coral reefs, Fishing, Diving and weather that is generally just perfect for detecting.

4 Hour Drive west and your on the gold.

With all you Victorians here I had to plug the Sunshine State.
