What to buy?

So we're Brand Newbies and want to buy our first detector... Of course everyone has different advice, We just want to start out and probably upgrade down the track, but don't want to waste our money on something useless first time round.. I was thinking $1500-2000 ...will this get us something okay or do we need to spend 4-5k like we've been told - we've also been told $800 might get us something entry level..
We're looking at having a scout about Victoria/NSW in the areas the permits allow. Any advice would be awesome.. cheers, Julie
