Is there any worthwhile fossicking (for any material -- not just gold) in any of these Local Government Areas? I specifically need information on the LGA areas identified (not other council areas near them).

Tweed Shire Council
Shellharbour Shire Council
Ballina Shire Council
Byron Shire Council
Albury City Council
Newcastle City Council

Please respond as soon as you can.

Thanks

If Nerriga , Oallen , Mongarlowe come under Shellharbour shire then those are a few

Does Dungog , Patterson or Barrington come under Newcastle or Hunter region ?

Albury ... Would Adelong and Yambula come under their region ?

That's all I can think off the top of my head

Newcastle,

Beaches, petrified wood and jasper pebbles can be found and polish up beautiful in a tumbler.

With beaches you never know what can be found.

Cheers

Hi Stephen,

If Coffs Harbour is part of Tweed Shire then its got a goldfield just outside the town.

There is gold, diamonds and rubies in patches all over NSW stretching down from the Queensland border most of it is inland from the NSW coast with pockets like Coffs Harbour on the coast.

Here are where the gold deposits are as you can see all those places mentioned have gold deposits near to or within a few hundred kilometres of them:

Almost every town in Australia was originally established to support the goldfields. Later they supported their own industries like Tobacco, Wool, etc. but they owe their original establishment to Gold.

Hope it helps. :D

Cheers,

Grant

Have heard of minerals out the back of Murwullimbah (Tyringham/Main Arm) - Tweed Shire. Opals and Au in the Ballina Shire. Crystal pockets in basalt throughout the Ballina, Tweed and Byron Shires

all the sandstone along the Newcastle beaches have petrified logs (forest)in the stone.. rusty looking, cant miss it... more huge petrified wood next to the albatross caravan park at Nambucca heads along the break wall... 600mm thick logs 2 mtrs + long.. 100 + tonnes of it ...there was petrified wood trees standing up right out of the water in one of the lakes there as well .... long since gone:)

BALLINA.1 DISTRICT

Ballina is situated on the North Coast at the mouth of the Richmond River, and is 517 miles north of Sydney via the Pacific Highway. The population is about 4000.

Gold. Some fine gold is associated with heavy mineral sands in old strandline deposits behind the beach near the mouth of the Richmond River and in places was of payable value.

Minerals. Important beach sand deposits containing rutile zircon, ilmenite and monazite are worked along the coast in this district Other valuable minerals including platinum and tin may occur in very small quantity in the heavy mineral Principal centres of activity have been at Byron Bay, Lennox Head and Evans Head.
A diatomite deposit is known at Tintenbar.

Gemstones. A transparent variety of precious opal occurring as nodules from pea to walnut size is found in the soil weathered from a volcanic rock at Tintenbar. At Teven similar opal occurs filling cavities in volcanic rock. The Tintenbar deposits are occasionally fossicked.

COFFS HARBOUR.1 DISTRICT

Coff's Harbour is on the Pacific Highway 393 miles by road and 378 miles by rail north of Sydney. The population is about 8000.

Gold. At Nana Creek good results came from crushings at the Beacon Mine in the early days. The Illabo and Matilda Hill were also in this locality. Other gold producing centres were at Upper and Lower Bucca, Orara, Tallewadjah Creek, Coramba, Karangi and Moleton. Both copper and gold were present in the Mount Brown and Mount Bischoff Mines near Coramba.

Minerals. Rutile and zircon sands occur along the coast in this district and have been mined at several places including Coff's Harbour and Woolgoolga. Coal is mined near Nymboida.

DORRIGO.1 DISTRICT

Dorrigo is 403 miles by road and 448 miles by rail north of Sydney. The population is about 1200.

Gold. Both reef and alluvial gold have been prospected at many points in this district notably on the Blick's River and Sheep Station Creek near Tyringham, at Cloud's Creek, Blackbull Creek, Bobo and along the Nymboida River. High level, gravels carrying lean gold values occur beneath basalt near Tyringham.

Minerals. Arsenical pyrites, copper pyrites, galena, molybdenite and bismuth have been found in the vicinity of Tyringham and the Guy Fawkes River, and antimony ores have been mined near Ebor.

Two veins of hematite iron ore occur 5 miles north west of Cascade.

could someone please tell me if there is somewhere near the Gold Coast Tweed heads area to go gold fossicking or gem stoning, we want to take the kids out on day trips so it can't really be more than two hours drive so we can keep our sanity. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)
