The best red-bellied black snake (which are classified as semi-venomous' apparently) I've seen was in the Wonnangatta Valley (Vic High Country) back in the '80s. We were camped near the river, and one glided through the bush while we were walking. Probably a good 5 foot, fat as mud and shiny. Had no concerns about us, or us about it as there was no element of surprise for either party.

The colouring of that one was with the classic red flanks, but that's in Vic and not up near Armidale like the one in this thread.

I got bitten on the hand by a large red belly blck snake a couple of years ago whild moving so timber at the back of a shed.
They are timid and generally strike as a last resort.this one must of got a hell of a fright and struck me.
The hospital staff said that it didnt really pump the venom into me but that it was just some residue on the tips of the fangs.
I was still crook for a while but I still love them.
Cheers Steve
