Road trip. Cairns to Melbourne

I hit the road next Saturday. So I will be driving down the inland way and was wondering, is there anywhere worth stopping on the way down to stretch the legs and have a scratch around.
I have 4 days to drive + 3000km
I would like to stop in at lightning ridge, for a look along the way.
Would anyone recommend any other spots along the way?

Some good spots in the Northern NSW for Sapphires but they are East of Lightning Ridge.

Ok. After 36 hours and 3000km.
I made it safe and sound to Melbourne.
What a drive.
We stopped into lighting ridge for and hour to have a look around. Stretched the legs and filled our bellies
We also stopped into see Lee at Townsville for a coffee. Thanks mate.
Was going to stop into El Dorado to see the few guys there for the weekend.
But kept going, as it would of been about 11pm by the time we got in.
Got back home just after 1am to a happy wife and a bourbon waiting for me.

If i start weper in April.
I'll be in shorts in winter too.
