Hi Hamish, welcome to the forum. Re-the "rock" how do you know it's an axe head. As for dating maybe send it to a geology lab-look it up on Mr Google. Can't help, sorry.

my dads friend from america told my dad it dates back to roughly 1000/2000 years old. ill take it to the Queensland museum

Looks like a rock to me - if you think it is an aboriginal artefact I'm pretty sure you are supposed to leave it where you found it ... By law.

Hi Hamish.
Aboriginal artifacts are all thru Australia,
But leave them where you found them,
The owners are the local tribe and are very very spiritual
people to there land and there ancestors.
It is nice to see areas where they were and they do not stop in 1 spot
they move around on there land.
any way you can see all the aboriginal mittens and artifacts in you museum,
Thats what museums are for.

What is the mussel size of a gun?
ATM to me, it looks like a 12 gauge shot gun.
The rock, does it show knapping on its edges?
as from your pic it is hard to tell.
