I bet there's a p!ssed off property developer somewhere  Glad to see it being taken care of as it should and history being preserved, something we haven't done well in the past. :(

Cool pictures.

I take it that it will be all built on when the dig is finished?

EDIT, just saw your post Phil. Was thinking the same thing. Even though we are a young country and it may only be around 200 years old it shouldn't be dismissed. There's some great sites overseas and good examples of countries preserving sites of importance. Would be nice to see that happen here, even a small area.

I read it that the site will be built on but some of the relics will be incorporated into the development site.

Correct mate, Was talking to an historian there and she said as Parramatta Square is built we will loose all the old footings from the first buildings in Parramatta. Sad really, as in town (Sydney) they try to put in glass floors etc so you can still see the old footings. They said they had 3 weeks to clear and record what they can then its gone for good. 8.(

Thanks for the comments people and you are all welcome, glad someone got to see it before it goes. It really depresses me when I go out to the old gold mining areas and see some arsehole has stripped scrap metal off some of the old miners huts and mining machinery. And don't start me on the greenies looking after our heritage, there answer is to lock all the bush up so no one can take anything. But then how the hell do people get out there to search and discover all the old relics and history of places? This country really needs to get its act together if we want anything left for the youngsters to learn about the "olden days". Rant over !!!

I see a fair bit of blue patterned china, I couldn't tell you how much of that stuff I've dug up around Gresford in my lifetime, its everybloodywhere.

Thanks for the great pics, really appreciate the effort. Interesting that no coins were found on the site, or at least none that we know of. :)

I asked did they use a metal detector and was told that's "forbidden". If you use a metal detector you are targeting one thing at a depth. They try to scrape away layer by layer and retrieve everything they come across. Metal detectors wont find 80% of whats on the table. The only time they use anything like a detector is when they use ground penetrating radar to find old sites and footings.
