Hello, sorry if this is in the wrong sub-forum. I just wanted to know if there is any where close to the river land to go gold prospecting?
Cheers,

I live in the Riverland and as far as I know there is none of that elusive yellow around here. The closest place would be in the Adelaide hills. Are you a local Riverlander?

The Goldfields of SA (PIRSA 2004) book shows no fields out that way (although there is an incorrect reference to the south of Renmark). The geology and topography is pretty much the same from the west of the St Arnaud goldfields in the north west of Victoria right across to the Adelaide Hills - that is: flat, sandy, scrubby, devoid of indications of gold bearing country.

If you have the map book I referred to, go to page 5 and there is a red map square to the south of Renmark, its the page with all the map squares marked - the map does not exist. I rang a mate in SA - he said the same thing and we are all puzzled about what it actually refers to.

There are only 2 areas open to the public for fossicking in SA, Mt Crawford and Jupiters Creek. Other areas can be found but you need permission from the property owners.

This gives a good rundown of the history of gold in SA http://tysaustralia.com/goldrushsouthaustralia.html and also this http://www.ach.familyhistorysa.info/gold.html

This is also a good read with a few maps too. https://sarigbasis.pir.sa.gov.au/WebtopEw/ws/samref/sarig1/image/DDD/ISM09.pdf

There is a book available too that is full of maps etc., I got mine from Miners Den. I can't find a link to it online at the moment and haven't got mine here with me, I think it's called Goldfields of South Australia and was about $35. But, there is plenty more info online if you (or your parents) don't want buy that.

Dont waist ya time heading to the Adelaide hills, head straight down the highway to Wedderburn in Vic..
Your chances will be a thousand fold better, and when you know that Sth oz only produced 0.1 % of Australia's
gold production it all makes good sense..

Pete

It is definatly hard pickings in SA but there is still gold there. If you can find gold here it should make things easier in better gold producing areas.
