I am planning on mainly panning and using a sluice, do i need a metal detector?
If so, is a Garrett Pro-Pointer sufficient or will i need to get a full metal detector too.

Cheers
Deano

Hi Deano. Welcome to the forum.
I was initially only interested in alluvial type gold prospecting... Pans, Sluices, Finding gold in creeks etc.
After joining PA and researching, I have got the prospecting bug BAD :)
I know I need to research more to improve my chances of finding gold.
So to sooth the lust I decided to buy a detector. I have enjoyed finding pennies etc In parks and beaches and can use my detector ( Garret AT Pro) on the gold fields. It is more a coin/relic detector tho and not a specialised gold detector. The Pro Pointer is more a find tuning device. So you need to dig smaller holes to find your treasure. Not really a detector as such. more a very useful accessory.
I'm sure the more experienced guys will offer their HUGE combined knowledge to help you.
Good luck with your journey into prospecting

Rod

Hi Deano. I started prospecting this year and dont ave a detector yet. I will get one when funds are available. a detector is useful to look for gold traces in streams or dry creeks. you can find conentrations of fine gold if you have the right detecor and the use pan or sluice to get to the gold. there are many vids on utube showing techniques you can use. good luck.. G'day Deano, You've got the right idea by starting your prospecting adventures with a pan and a sluice. Mastering your panning technique won't take that long, and the addition of a sluice will let you process much larger amounts than a pan alone. There are many pans on the market and all of them catch gold. Some are designed for competition speed panning such as the turbo style pans and others are more suited as cleanup pans.

Many prospectors choose one of each in their arsenal. My personal choice if you were to pick one pan only would be the Garrett Super Sluice as it is about the most versatile on the market. By having 2 decent gravity traps and a large base it can handle both "wet" and "Dry" panning. Dry panning with a "speed" style pan is less efficient.

A metal detector is usually the next step down the prospecting road, and its an item which requires much thought before purchase. It has to compliment where you will be spending most of your time, hence so many specialized units on the market. Not much benefit in buying a specialized gold detector for the beach and same for a specialized coin detector for gold.

The good thing about joining a forum like this one, is you get a variety of responses from dedicated prospectors, which helps tremendously with making up ones mind on equipment purchases. Best of luck,

Cheers Wal.

@Ramjet

Hey Rod

Yes I know what you mean about getting the prospecting bug, I think its in the blood, Im a city boy and need to get my hands dirty again, I panned once at a tourist place in Alaska 20 years ago and still fancy my chances as a prospector Haha dont we all..

@ TenOnce

Hi Tone

yeah thanks I think I need to warrant the cost first, maybe find a few little pickers then can convince the wife that my destiny as a prospector i will need the big guns and buy a detector, haha

@WalnLiz

Hey Wal

Yes totally agree, just like to have a good selection of tools to increase my chances, and being impatient I tend to run before I can walk LOL

and already got a set of 3 classifier pans 2 cheap pans, and a turbo pan, started to build the Walbanker and just ordered a Garrett Pro-Pointer, which I now realize I probably dont need.
I had read some post where you had mentioned the Garrett Super Sluice and will look at getting one.
I should have stuck to my favorite quote " Buy the best and Cry Once"
I will hold out on the Detector so as I can get a good one latter.

Thanks for all the great info, hoping to get out to the field real soon

Cheers
Deano

Thanks for that mbasko

looks like a nice buy! wonder what the price will be in 2 days?

If you are interested in wet prospecting I would start off there, we got a detector early on, and even though we have enjoyed using it we do a lot more highbanking than we do detecting and probably could have saved some money. But in saying that a detector can be a handy tool even wet prospecting ( checking tailings pile for nuggets, finding black sand concentrations) but is not necessary.

Hi Shivan

thanks for the feedback, and yes i think getting a pan wet is my best starting place

cheers

Up to $450 now with less than 1hr to go. Didn't think it would get that high. Obviously they are a good machine - plenty of interest.
