Can you buy old allotments in abandoned towns ?

Just wondering if you can buy old allotments in abadoned towns ? Are they still freehold ? Are they even valid now ? I have no idea.

I'd imagine each would be different depending on where etc.
I know some old "ghost" towns in NSW can be Crown Land (Reserve, Heritage Site, Unmanaged etc.), National Park, Private Property or a mixture of them all.
