He has a statue and park in central Hobart and is best remembered for losing two ships, and getting himself and the two crews (total about 129) killed. Additionally, according to...

Both good guesses - they fit the clues, but wrong century :) It would seem that she was the brains of the outfit The power behind the throne. An explorer and sponsor of exploration.

OK, I am going to guess Alexander Pearce and Father Philip Conolly, both born in County Monaghan, but I can't find mention of what villages.

OK, wrong about the English bit, whoops! I thought I had read that recently (when looking for answers to this). So Pearce IS a good suspect for shoe thief, escapee and Irish villager (though needing to narrow it down a bit from 'County Monaghan')

    Australian History

Nope. The horse involved is a trotter/pacer, not a galloper. And definitely more South East than South :)
  12. C

    Australian History

    Nope, none of those
  13. C

    Australian History

Nope to all those. It is a place in the South East of Australia which all the previous clues apply to. (and where I live, though not my house or my mum's.)

I had a few great years. I was named for a fake, or maybe not. I run hot and cold. There's plenty of flies on me. I used to keep up a good pace. <- this is the horse clue (I'm not naming the horse, that would be a giveaway smile ) People say I am very friendly. I am a place.

    Australian History

It's not a horse or a horse racing cup or anything along those lines :) The horse clue is just one of several, any of which lead to the answer.
  17. C

    Australian History

Nope to your conclusion, yes to 'a pacer/trotter' (as the clue, not the answer)

Nope, it's not a horse. One of the clues involves a horse (well, ex-horse really, it has ceased to be...)
