Yalwal NSW South Coast information and questions

yalwal is basically all either NP, conservation and wilderness(?) area, i think there is a couple of spots you would be allowed to pan or detect but i am still researching this as it is very bad to be in the wrong spot as we arnt allowed into these areas.
just dont want to see you in trouble mate

nice country, looks like a small pocket on the other side of danjerra dam, that might be accessible, on the tight bend, big spur running up the escarpment, looks like really nice country, but have no idea of the gold potential.....only one way to find out!

there are two little pockets like that davent, is taking me a bit to find out if it is closed off to prospectors or not, still not 100% sure

I used to live in the gong, and from google earth., I can tell how steep and hard going it would be swinging a detetyector around there!

National parks covers the mines and all the far side of the dam. Used to be tracks on the far side until they closed the road next to Yarramunmun creek, which stopped vehicle access to that side.
Last time we were on the far side of the dam it took us a day to cut a path 1/2 way up the hill. The scrub on that side is very thick and any shafts on that side are almost invisible, so tread carefully if exploring.

Does anyone know is the creek near wombat flat camp ground national park

As I'm new to the hobby I wanna ask as many questions and do the right thing

i am not 100% sure but that part is state Forrest but is conservation so still no prospecting

sorry to bring up an old topic but did anyone look at panning in the area? considering going down in the next few weeks if its worth my time

the last time I was up there they had padlocked the gate just off the road so you cant get through to the mines area unless you carry your stuff about 5k I think I am not sure
the property at the end of the road is also locked and the owner even though I know him will not let anyone on his land and has been known to call the cops on people that jump his fence

From the locked gate there are a few mines that are within a couple of hundred meters. The bigger adits and the open cut are a bit further around but i don't think it would be 5km Marksman more like 1 - 1.5, the killer is the big hill.... Makes it feel like 5 k's

The entire area around the mines is still national parks, so no go for prospecting, but is still interesting to have a wander around.

Wow, old Yalwal. I went there a lot as a teenager - just camping and exploring and canoeing, never fossicking - although i do have the old mine maps, and a mining/history book of the area (somewhere). Last time I was there (~35 years ago) the caretaker of the area still lived onsite - Rex i think his name was. He was a million years old then. He lived in the hut to the left of the cemetery (sorta) - up the the hill a bit. Dunno if the hut is still there though. Didn't realize it was NP now days. Pity. I recall long conversations with Rex. He said even though they flooded the town, there was still plenty of gold in the hills and old workings, and "special" places he still worked, as the mines were at the top of the hills, whereas town down the bottom at the creek.

Before Google Maps we had to buy aerial photos from the NSW Lands Department. Here's one of Yalwal from 1989 that i bought from them for hiking I was doing in the area at the time.
