Don't know where you blokes were prospecting but up in NE Vic we will always stop and say G'day to any prospector and chew the fat. Never had any bad reaction and offers of a cuppa almost always.
As a mining person I would suggest that is NOT an adit but a stope to surface. There is likely a Winze in there capped with now rotten wood and soil. Been there, done that - not safe.
