practising close-ups with a Canon-SLR-600-D and a magnifying glass on some samples I took in the Tallendoon area

Nice pics there 20xH2O would you care to share the setup a little as well. Did you use a tripod, what type of lighting did you use and lens, what type of Mag was it 10x 20x ?

See if you can close down the aperture to create a bit more depth of field. This will make focusing a little easier as well. Also a grey card is a good idea especially with anything that requires correct colour in the samples shown.

hi mate, no tripod(will do), halogen desk lamp lighting, 18-55 lens.
I noticed it all looks different depending on angle of light and camera.

Looking pretty good. All I can add is maybe to grab a set of extension tubes, these push the lens further away from your camera which increases the projected image circle resulting in a increase in magnification.

I had a quick search on ebay and something like this would be fine - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/221417322261 there is no glass in extension tubes so cheap ones are just as effective as expensive ones - just make sure they carry the electronic contacts as Canon EF has no mechanical linkage for aperture.

I use extension tubes on my Pentax with a 100mm dedicated macro lens which is extremely effective.

Oh yeah another thing re lighting, you can never have too much. I have a couple of flashes and off camera radio triggers and umbrellas and what not and whilst I don't always use it it all gets used depending on what I am photographing.

really nice rocks you got there ey. I don't have the answers to whats in your rocks or mine lol. Im concertrating on alluvial gold really...but I must say when I first seen the samples I took I was fooled :lol:

Very sure that rock has a large concentration of silver. Yes I am doing both, Alluvial, but also looking for strikes, this town needs it.
