Go for the 2200d @ a grand. Dead set bargain at that price, but you might need a Sadie or 8" Commander for really small gold. Fly poop VLFs give me the willy's. Go PI and use a pan for fly poop.

Yes it is, if it has the 7.4v battery system.

In very hot ground you may struggle with the mono coils, so having 1 or 2 small/medium sized dd coils would be good.
 
Genuinely, thank you everybody for the advice and help in this thread and on the forum. I've now purchased the White's SPP PI machine that was being sold on the classifieds here. Shipping on the 2200D was going to push it out of my price range, and I can't quite put my finger on it, but through my research the White's machines just kept drawing me back in. I think with the right coil and practice it will be a very capable little unit. Seems like it will pack small for hiking as well.

Now I just have to wait for it to arrive and figure out where to start!
