G'day all,
Yesterday I found a ring with my Xterra 705. It's reading came up as a 30!
However the ring says "9ct" .
It weighs about 5 grams.
Would anyone know why this may be???
It is the first Gold ring i have found, although the signal seems to be way off a gold ring reading.
Co.

I’ve got an Xterra 505 and a 305 and I’ve found different carats of gold give different readings (numbers). This would be due to the different levels of gold purity in the different targets. I don’t pay too much faith in going by numbers alone with my Xterra.

9 carat gold is only 37.5% gold, the remaining 62.5% is a mixture of silver and copper, with possibly (according to Google) tin, nickel and zinc! It wouldn't be surprising if some of these mixtures produced a more conductive alloy than others and hence, an unpredictable detector reading for the metal.

Also, as Hilux notes above, the dimensions of the target no doubt play a part, especially with such a wide 9ct ring as this one.

Size and composition of the target is likely the main factor in what target ID number is shown.
I have a few 9ct "gold" rings that show 30-ID on an XTerra 70/705 with a 9" concentric coil.
Same targets ID as 32 when using a DD coil.

you for your response. So much for the ID charts!
