Cut billet in half and welded. Rough grind and shape to make sure billet was solid, all good so couldn’t resist an etch to see how it looked. I’m stoked at the result being my second attempt. Was worried I wasn’t going to have enough material but as it turns out there’s probably enough for two knives in this one. Anyway was a quite day at work so I’ve got to keep busy somehow.😁

If I'd expected it I'd have saved the old caustic. I poured off the top into another container so I might have half but I haven't worked out what to do with it yet. The caustic can be used to extract the dissolved gold from Aqua Regia but that's not what I have to start with.
I think you need a chemical engineer.🤣

Almost 14g floating around in your rubbish heap somewhere somehow still then hey.... perhaps

I think it would be closer to 100g all up but I never weighed it so I'll never know. I still have the first of the mud poured off the top. It set solid when cured but I don't know what to do with it. After that photo where you can see the gold in the jug I just rinsed the caustic out into a patch of dirt so half it would be gone forever. There may be some way to recover the gold from the bit I poured off?

Didn’t make this, just gave a clean sand and a new paint job.
Old ammo box.

Next project; restor this 1920’s era Glory box back to its former glory.. This box belonged to my Aunt Emily Australia who was a Federation baby born in 1901 and passed away in 1975 ..

Looks like you've got you work cut out with that one. It deserves to be brought back to original condition.

Agree Phil
I recon its original wood colour although darkened by age , can be seen on the inside of the chest.. if I can match that at the finish it would be good.
My next door neighbor is a very experience wood worker and hopefully he can advice me on the best way to go about restoring the chest back to its original condition..

Still got a fair bit of grinding to do but had to give it an etch to see how it looked. Keeps on changing so won’t really know how it will end up until finished. So far no flaws so all good.

Finally got around to heat treating and tempering the first two. Seems to have worked out ok. Hardness may be not be quite right but I’ll check it at work tomorrow. Wish I knew how I made the pattern on the bottom one. Anyway it’s an adventure into something I really don’t know about and that’s refreshing.😁

Almost finished. Got a few flaws I need to address. Better get a hurry up as it’s a Christmas pressy for the sister in law.
