Hi gang. I'm a gun sluicer and panner but age is catching me and I'm thinking of buying a detector to stop myself from bucket sieving for hours and risking my dodgy back, I'm sure I'm not alone with this issue.
But..
I got real bad tiniitus, basically I've flogged my body as a glorified construction labour too long and all the warranties are rapidly expiring.
So, I'm wondering if any of these devices makes less or more noise. Interested in small stuff so a high quality waterproof coil like vlf monster kruzer ect, would stretch the budget to an sdc if it was significantly quieter overall.
I'm sure you will all have opinions and I'd be greatful for shared knowledge.
Cheers
And thanks for the wonderful forum

I also suffer from tinnitus and run an SDC and a 7000. When I use earphones they seem to overpower any tinnitus, but it would depend on the nature of the affliction.

Hey fellas i also suffer with tinnitus and have done for about 18 years after experiencing a dizzy spell one morning. I wear hearing aides specifically to try and dismiss the constant high pitched squeal . It certainly does help and by the way it is not a hearing condition, it is a brain issue that appears to come from the inner ear.

You might find a detector with adjustable audio frequency helps if you can find a freq that cuts thru your head noise.

Gold Kruzer audio can be adjusted from 150Hz to 700Hz.
Equinox 800 has adjustable audio frequency but range isnt specified.
SDC2300 has 2 options Hi & Lo tone but neither freq specified.
I dont think Gold Monster has adjustable tone- is doesnt really have adjustable anything :)

Thanks for the useful replys. Yep know about the condition a lot. Lots of good medical people around mercifully. Hearing aids help many sufferers, lots of snake oil selling. I heard recently some poor bloke was going insane from it (I emphasise) so the quacks decided to surgically make him deaf but it sadly was no cure so in laymans terms I assume "it's all in your head". Anyway it sucks. And sucks getting old. But life living in the goldfields is pretty cool

I'll chime in here, as it's had me at the edge of self harm and worse. One of the list of reasons I was med discharged from the Air Force after 21+ years. Working on fighters, being around explosives, warzones, and mandatory weapon shoots every year...not good. Anyway, I use a combo of hearing aides during the day and my biggest blessing for sleep, Bose Sleepbuds! Have changed my sleep for the better. And absolutely right Mackka, simulated noise created by the brain, to apparently mask/recreate what it it used to hearing.

My 2c, download a frequency generator app and find your freq/volume. Providing that helped my audiologists provide the correct aides. Mine sits around the 6khz level and quite loud...to me.

To the detectoring, I have a Nox 800 and the standard issue earphones, work a treat.

Stay strong, and use distraction. Do anything you can other than think about it đź‘Ť

Just goes to show there is always someone worse off. I have had tinnitus for as long as I remember it seems from my gunnery days in the RAN in the 60's & 70's. But by what I am reading here I don't have a problem! I can't imagine putting up with it as bad as some of you have.

I don't think there would be many of us from any of the services that don't have some degree of tinnitus. I figure that's why DVA have it as an express accepted condition.

I'm with all the guys in the tinnitus brigade but have not had any trouble detecting with it over many years. If anything I feel my tinnitus is less worrisome when I am out and about detecting and listening "through" and not focusing on the tinnitus.
Using a 5000 with variable tone, I prefer a lower tone setting (33-35), but also have had no problems with the high tone on the 2300 on really small stuff. (I had not even realised until reading this thread that there was a way of lowering the tone tone on the 2300). I'm a bloke and as my wife always says blokes don't read manuals - only when they get into trouble.

I visited my Audiologist today checking my hearing aids and hearing without them. He told me that my hearing hadn't changed over the last 1.5 yrs. He was happy with that as was i. New batteries and a clean of the audio system was all good. The Audiologist also asked me about tinnitus and i advised him that i can hear a continuous "white noise" which I have lived with for the past 2 yrs. His reply was that if it doesn't bother you that your brain is filtering well. I'm happy , Medicare is sad but that's what they are there for.

When i was diagnosed by the Specialist, he suggested i go along to meditation classes to try and control my brain functions to reduce the issue. There were 20 odd in my class once per week. Many cases were far worse than mine and unfortunately, 2 participants took their own lives due to Tinnitus, very sad. The meditation worked for me as a distraction and anything that is a distraction can help. Stay Safe everyone. Mackka

Have the same background LostNtired....plus choppers. Good to hear about the Bose Sleepbuds. Really cheeses me off sometimes.

I have had tinnitus all of my life. When I was a kid I thought everybody had it.
My tinnitus overrides all outside noises I can yell, scream or be listening to a screaming jet engine, I will still hear the constant ringing . Some days are not so bad but I have had it for so long now I guess I am used to it.. My tinnitus is very loud after I have been driving for an hour or so.

I cannot recall a time without it,and I find it difficult to imagine life without it, but it would be great if it was gone.
I feel it is something in my head / brain and has nothing to do with my ears.

Adrian, there are new clinical trials being done and yes it is all about the brain and not the ears. I was first told that because i was a pistol shooter that the Sharp Crack of the discharge brought it on. I said i Always wore ear muffs, then he changed his tune and said i could have had a mini stroke. However, i do find that meditation and distractraction are excellent in taking the annoyance away, temporarily.
